Database query logging

I want have the possibility to log all queries or to implement a caching function for all queries ... what is the best way to do that?

With a database wrapper class? Or extending a database adapter class and if yes which one, the concrete adapter (eg: Pdo_MySql) or the more abstract one (Zend_Db_Adapter_Abstract)?
