Default Prepared Statements Vs Stored procedures

Being caught between these two for some days now. My question is when is it appropriate/advisable (in terms of speed,scablity and performance) for one to be used over the other?

Does it yield a higher performace graph when you keep stored routines on the db server(stored procedures) or excute on the application side as prepared statements?

I know on the db side SP are precompiled what about the application side? Does it have to compile each time it is excuted?

The issue of scalability and not tying your application to a db server - what if you dont forsee a migration to another db server? Should a prep statement still be advisable in the MVC scenario?

How many excution trips will occur with a statement like running it from the application or from the db server:

Code:
select column from table where column =?;
Thanks i will really appreciate some insightful comments on this
