Default IDE of choice?

I'm still using notepad++ to edit my Zend Framework files.

Ideally I'd use a 'notepad replacement' because I don't like a complicated UI. But that said I really would like intellisense and a project manager or file browser sidebar that allowed you to define a root directory for the project (so that you don't see all of your drives).

Anyone know if there are any editors that are small in GUI but fairly large in features? Particularly intellisense is something lacking from a lot of PHP editors. Some of them require you to use keystrokes, which I hate, and most don't parse your own files (only include core PHP functions).

I second Eclipse.
I use a mix of PDT and Aptana's jaxer free. I don't use Ajax but Aptana has very good support for css.

I think Zend Studio has a much cleaner and simpler interface. It's not that expensive either. I tried to use Eclipse, but found it to be clunky, non-intuitive and a pain to use.

Btw, i am curious about how you mix PDT/Zend Studio for Eclipse and Aptana.

I mean:
- what perspective you're using ? Aptana or PDT/ZSE ?
- php files would be edited by PDT/ZSE editor, HTML and CSS by Aptana but then view files (.phtml) would be edited by ?

Also, i think PDT is going to be dead since Zend decided to release ZSE. I am wrong somehow ?

I basically downloaded the one and added the other through the update mechanism. I believe I updated PDT into Aptana (don't quite remember). Not very professional and probably not the best way to do it.
I agree Eclipse is bloated and has some very unpleasant pitfalls that may erase your work if you are no careful.

The reason for my 'patchwork' installation is that I need good php _and_ css support and nothing else. Basically Aptana is providing the css support.
I create PDT-projects.

Cristian,

I installed ZSE (which includes PDT) and Aptana as plugins to Eclipse, which btw is a PITA as ZSE has some dependencies which can be tricky to track down its much easier to install Aptana into the standalone ZSE distribution.

The nice thing about eclipse is you can switch perspectives at any time. phtml files I usually start in Aptana perspective then will switch to php perspective when I start adding more logic. Of course I attempt to keep any php in my phtml files to a minimum.

Am I the only one still using TruStudio (Eclipse)?

I can't stand some of the quirks with the latest version of Zend Eclipse. I've tried PDT a few times as well (same project?).

What I like more about TruStudio is the syntax highlighting (more control) and I haven't found any typing bugs. It does have its own problems though.

I guess it might be time to move because I really want FTP and SVN support!
