How to write a RewriteRule for static content and the public directory ?

Hi, how does one write a RewriteRule so that I can use the following in my source files:

/
/images
/javascripts
/stylesheets

At this time, I'm using the following:

/root_directory/public
/root_directory/public/images
/root_directory/public/javascripts
/root_directory/public/stylesheets
